How to Become a Surrogate
Some women have a great experience becoming pregnant and want to use their gift of fertility to help other families in need. If you have enjoyed being pregnant in the past and you are considering surrogacy because you want to give others the gift of a child, it is important to become knowledgeable on the surrogacy process and determine whether you will qualify.
At Baby Steps Surrogacy Center, Inc., we put every potential surrogate mother through an intensive screening process to ensure they are both physically and mentally ready for the journey ahead. Surrogacy requires a healthy and fertile body, but it also requires someone who can emotionally handle carrying a child who is not their own.
Qualifications for Surrogacy
Some initial qualifications for surrogacy include being a nonsmoker and non-drug user, having a healthy body-mass index, passing a mental health evaluation, being free of sexually transmitted infections, being of child-bearing age, and having already successfully carried one baby to term.
If you meet the qualifications above, you still may not be matched with an intended parent or parents right away. You will be entered in the surrogacy system, and an intended parent can then choose you as their surrogate. It is important for surrogate mothers to know that an intended parent or parents can choose them at any time. Once you are chosen and matched with an intended parent, you can then decide if you feel like it is the right fit.
Preparing for the Surrogacy Process
We will make sure you pass a basic mental health evaluation, but you should also mentally prepare for surrogacy on your own. Surrogacy is a personal journey, and you should not embark on this journey unless you feel that you can emotionally handle it. You should understand that the baby you carry is not your own and you must give it up after the birth with no strings attached.
