Egg Donor Qualifications

Egg donors play an important role in assisted reproductive technology. Without egg donors, same-sex couples and other intended-parent couples and individuals who struggle with infertility or are otherwise unable or unwilling to conceive could not have a child of their own. At Baby Steps Surrogacy Center, Inc., we work with egg donors and intended couples, and we match each donor with the right family.

We put our egg donors through an intensive screening process to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the gift they are about to provide. If you are considering egg donation, knowing these qualifications can prepare you for what is coming. If you are an intended parent, this outline can make you feel more at ease about the donor you choose.

Physical and Mental Health

When screening potential egg donors, we make sure every donor is in good physical and mental health. Every donor must be a nonsmoker, must abstain from illegal drug use, and must have a body mass index of less than twenty-eight. You may not be eligible for egg donation if you are on Depo-Provera for birth control, if you do not have regular monthly periods, or if you have some reproductive abnormalities.

Because the donor’s genes are passed on to their eggs, it is essential for the egg donor to be in good health. All donors must be between the ages of 21 and 28 and must go through a psychological evaluation, as well.

Time Requirements

If we determine that you are in good physical and mental health and can donate your eggs, you must also make a six-month commitment to the medication and egg retrieval process. Donating eggs is much more complex than donating sperm. You must self-inject medications to increase your egg count and then have your eggs extracted for donation.

Your Intentions

One of the most important considerations when approving an egg donor is ensuring that all donors have the correct intentions when donating. Some potential egg donors are only interested in the compensation, when the point of egg donation is to help a family in need.

Women who are only interested in the money may not commit to the full process, which is why it is essential to find women who have good intentions and can be trusted.
